The local village of Demre is famed for its archaeological sites, suitable weather and beautiful sandy beaches largely untouched by tourism The region is called as “The Land of St. Nicholas” by historians. The world-famous St. Nicholas (Father Christmas) has lived his entire life and was the bishop of the church that is named after him. The St. Nicholas Church, where he also buried at, is now a museum in downtown Demre.

The St. Nicholas Church is receiving a mass number of Orthodox pilgrims along with many others every year. The traditional agricultural town of Demre, also has further well-preserved ancient attractions such as Lycian rock tombs, Roman amphitheatre, Kekova underwater city, Andriake Harbour and Museum along with crystal clear turquoise colour sea, unspoilt sandy beaches and scenic surroundings.
